Help to find your way back into the dream

The questions we are asked most, sorted by topic. If yours isn't here, write to us.

Getting started

Which devices can play it?
  • iPhone and iPad: iOS and iPadOS 15 or later. The game is played in landscape.
  • Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD: tvOS 15 or later, with a controller to play.
  • Mac: macOS 12 or later, with Apple silicon or an Intel processor.

It is one single app for all four, with one page on the App Store.

When does it come out, and how much is it?

The release date and the price are still to come. They will be shown on this site as soon as they are known.

How does a game begin?

In the menu, choose Story. A new game starts with the Adventurer, whom you dress your way, then a short film opens the story: a boy falls asleep, and his toys get lost in his dreams. The Sandman tells you the rest.

The menu also offers the Duel (1 to 4 players) and the Mini-games, to replay once found in the worlds. The round “?” button in the menu shows your controller's buttons.

Do I need an Internet connection?

No, the game plays offline. A connection is only used by Game Center (achievements and leaderboards), by iCloud to sync your games, when you use them, and to send anonymous usage statistics (which games, how long, how many players; never your name). Without a connection, they wait on the device. You can turn them off in Options › Gameplay › Anonymous statistics: it is all explained in the privacy policy.

Are there ads or in-app purchases?

No. No ads, no in-app purchases, no tracking. Rewards are earned by playing, and nothing is ever spent.

Controllers and controls

What do I play with?
  • iPhone and iPad: by touch, with an on-screen stick and buttons, or with a controller. In Options › Touch controls, you can set the button size, the stick (floating or fixed) and a left-handed mode.
  • Mac: with the keyboard or a controller.
  • Apple TV: with a controller. The Siri Remote is used for the menus.
Which controllers work?

On iPhone, iPad and Apple TV, the game uses the controllers the device recognises as full game controllers (two sticks, four buttons, triggers), such as PlayStation, Xbox or MFi controllers. Connect them in the device's Bluetooth settings.

On Mac, plug your controller in with USB or connect it over Bluetooth.

The game shows your controller's own buttons: ✕ ○ △ □ on a PlayStation controller, A B X Y on the others. Buttons remapped in the controller settings of your iPhone, iPad or Apple TV are followed.

Can I change the keys and buttons?

Yes: Options › Accessibility › Controls. Pick the Keyboard or Controller tab, select an action, then press the new key. “Aim” can be done by holding the button or by pressing it twice. The menu keys themselves never change.

Aiming is hard by touch or with the keyboard.

Turn on Options › Gameplay › Aim assist: your throws lean a little toward the nearest opponent. For younger players, the gentle mode helps aiming too (see below).

Playing together

Can two people play the Story?

Yes, on the same screen. Connect one more controller: the game invites player 2 to press ✕ (or A) to come and help, then to choose who to play, a toy already freed or the Sand Buddy. They can join or leave at any time.

Player 2 helps and can never make you lose: their knockouts never end the game. The Story and its progress stay player 1's.

And the Duel?

The Duel is for 1 to 4 players on the same screen, with friends or against the computer, in 23 arenas and with 22 characters. Each player has a controller; on Mac, one of them can use the keyboard. On iPhone and iPad without a controller, you face the computer by touch.

What is the party mode?

A little tournament of 3 or 5 mini-games for 2 to 4 players, who pass the device (or the controller) around in turn. Its card comes first in the Mini-games list. The evening's scores are not kept by the game: no record, no medal.

Saves and iCloud

How is my game saved?

On its own, as you play. Each device keeps up to 4 games, one per child for instance, each with its own Adventurer. To switch games, choose the portrait in the top left of the menu: the Who's playing? screen opens. It also opens at launch when the device holds several games.

Does my game follow me from one device to another?

Yes, with iCloud: if your devices use the same Apple Account, your games show up on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Mac. Without iCloud, they stay on the device they are played on.

Before merging two versions of the same game, the game keeps a backup copy. If a device already has its 4 places taken, a 5th game waits for a place to free up.

I'd like to go back to an earlier save.

The game keeps backup copies of each game, including one for each day played. Open Who's playing? › … › Go back to a copy… and pick one. The game as it is now is kept as a copy first: nothing is lost.

Gentle mode and help

What is the gentle mode?

A setting for younger players, in Options › Gameplay › Gentle mode:

  • 6 hearts instead of 3;
  • falls no longer hurt;
  • during boss fights, the nightmares move more slowly;
  • throws lean a little toward the nearest monster.

It applies to the current game only, and can be switched on or off at any time, even from the pause.

A nightmare is too hard.

The game helps on its own. After 3 defeats against the same boss, hearts of sand fall into the arena. After 5, the Sandman offers to skip this nightmare: he puts it to sleep, the plush is won and the toy still comes home.

How do I keep evenings short?

At the end of each world, the Sandman offers to say “Good night”: the game is kept for the next day (Options › Gameplay › Offer to stop after each world, on by default).

Tonight's dream is one small challenge per evening. There is no streak to keep, no countdown and no notification: a missed evening doesn't count.

What about accessibility?

Text size, reduced motion, remappable controls: it is all on the Accessibility page.

Apple TV

Do I need a controller on Apple TV?

Yes. The Siri Remote is used for the menus; to play, you need a controller, PlayStation, Xbox or MFi, connected in Settings › Remotes and Devices › Bluetooth.

Without one, the game shows “Connect a controller to play”, and the game starts as soon as a controller is connected. If it disconnects during play, your game waits for you.

Which Apple TV do I need?

An Apple TV 4K or an Apple TV HD, with tvOS 15 or later. The Options › Display › Scenery detail setting starts on “Auto”: the game picks the quality that suits the device.

Can several people play on Apple TV?

Yes, with one controller per player: the Story for two, the Duel for up to 4. In party mode, a single controller passed around is enough.

Languages

Which languages is the game in?

Texts in French and English. The game uses the device's language; you can change it in Options › Gameplay › Language.

The Sandman's voice is recorded in French, and partly in English. Everything he says is also written on screen.

Troubleshooting

The game doesn't see my controller.
  1. Check that it is connected to the device: the Bluetooth settings of your iPhone or iPad, Settings › Remotes and Devices › Bluetooth on Apple TV, a USB cable or Bluetooth on Mac.
  2. Press one of its buttons once you are in the game.
  3. If it was paired with another device close by (a console, for instance), it may be reconnecting to it: turn it off, then pair it again.
  4. On iPhone, iPad and Apple TV, only full controllers recognised by the device work.

Still nothing? Write to us with the controller's model.

How do I start over?
  • A new game next to the other one: in Who's playing?, choose a free place, “New game”.
  • Restart a world: inside that world, open the pause and choose “Restart this world…”.
  • Restart this game's whole Story: from the main menu, Options › Progress › Erase progress. Your settings and your other games stay as they are, and a backup copy is kept first.
How do I erase a game?
  1. In the menu, choose the portrait in the top left to open Who's playing?
  2. On the game's card, choose the round “…” button, then “Erase the game…”.
  3. Hold “Erase” for 2 seconds. If you let go sooner, nothing happens.

With iCloud, the game is erased from your other devices too. It stays on this device for 30 days: Who's playing? › Find a game can bring it back.
